What was happening
Mark came to Synergy in fall 2022 with pain in his neck and shoulders that traveled down his arms. That pattern — pain at the neck and shoulder that radiates — is one of the more common neurological signals a person can present with. It is also one of the most frequently mistreated.
The radiating piece is what makes it different from ordinary neck stiffness. The body is sending a signal that something further up — usually nerve root irritation in the cervical spine — is being provoked.
What other providers missed
Radiating arm pain often gets a workup focused on the local site — the shoulder, the elbow — because that is where the symptom shows up. Imaging may catch the cervical contribution. Treatment may not.
What is often missed is the postural and mechanical pattern feeding the irritation. The cervical spine sits at the end of a chain that includes the thoracic spine, the rib cage, the shoulder blades, and the muscles of the deep neck. When any link in that chain stops doing its job, the cervical spine takes on work it was not built for — and the nerve roots pay for it.
What we did differently
Our team assessed the full chain and treated the mechanical sources of the nerve irritation, not just the symptom. Manual therapy to restore mobility in the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle. Targeted release of the structures that were compressing or tethering the cervical region. Active retraining so the deep neck stabilizers could take over the work the surface muscles had been doing in their place.
Once the nerve had room to do its job without being chronically irritated, the radiating pain had no reason to persist.

From neck and shoulder pain radiating down both arms, to completely pain free.
