Patient Success Story · Shoulder Bursitis & Knee Pain · Stopped Injections, Walking Restored
After just one week of therapy I felt much better. My knee pain wasn’t there so much either. I stopped taking Rooster Comb shots in the knee. I can walk much better now.
— Mary K. McGinnis
What was happening
Mary came in with shoulder bursitis and knee pain. The knee pain was significant enough that she had been receiving hyaluronic acid injections (commonly known by the brand name Rooster Comb) on a regular basis just to keep walking.
She came hoping for relief from the shoulder. What she found was that the right intervention reached further than she expected.
What other providers missed
Two joints hurting at the same time is the body telling a story about load and compensation. When the shoulder hurts, the gait shifts. When the knee hurts, the way the body carries weight through the trunk and into the upper body shifts. The two complaints are rarely independent — and treating them as if they were is why so many patients keep cycling between providers.
Joint injections can buy time and reduce inflammation in a flared joint. But they do not address why the joint flared in the first place. The biomechanical pattern that loaded the knee abnormally is still there after the injection wears off.
What we did differently
Our team assessed the shoulder, the knee, and the chain between them. Hip mobility. Trunk control. How weight was being transferred when she walked. Where compensations had built up over years.
The treatment addressed the system, not just the two sore spots. Manual therapy where mobility had been lost. Targeted loading to retrain the muscles that had quieted down. Education on movement strategies she could use at home.
The outcome
One week in, the shoulder was much better. The knee pain had quieted too. She stopped the injections. She is walking much better.
Stopping a recurring injection is not just about saving the appointment. It is about a body that no longer needs the rescue because the underlying pattern has changed. That is what conservative care can do when it goes upstream of the symptom.
