Patient Success Story · Sports Injury · Shoulder · Pain 7/10 → 0/10
I came to Synergy following a sports injury. My pain was 7-8 out of 10 in my shoulder. I could not raise my arm or participate in any sports. After therapy and the deep tissue laser, I now have full range of motion and can wrestle. My pain is now a 0-1 out of 10.
— Elijah Mohring
What was happening
Elijah arrived with a shoulder he could not raise and pain at 7 to 8 out of 10. For a young athlete in season, that level of injury does not stay contained — it takes the sport, the training, the team, and a piece of identity with it.
He needed to get back to wrestling. The clock was the problem as much as the shoulder was.
What other providers missed
The standard sports-injury pathway often defaults to rest, anti-inflammatories, and time. For a competitive athlete that is the wrong tool. Rest alone does not address the protective patterns the body builds around an acute injury, and time without input often produces a shoulder that is “okay” for daily life but not okay for high-load athletic demand.
Athletes need the same diagnostic precision the injury required — plus a return-to-sport progression that the assessment-of-symptoms-only model does not provide.
What we did differently
Our team combined manual therapy and deep tissue laser to address the local tissue, then layered progressive loading to rebuild capacity through the shoulder, scapula, and trunk. Laser therapy at clinical dosing has solid evidence for reducing acute musculoskeletal pain and accelerating tissue recovery when paired with active therapy.
The progression was matched to wrestling demands. Not generic strengthening, but the specific positions, loads, and explosive movements his sport asks for.
The outcome
Elijah has full range of motion. Pain is now a 0 to 1 out of 10. He is back on the mat.
A shoulder injury at his age does not have to end a season. With the right intervention, what felt like a wall becomes a setback — and a setback is something you train through.
